Work has commenced on the $135 million Casey Hospital upgrade. The expansion will provide an extra 128 new multi-day beds, 12 intensive care unit beds, 12 day surgical beds and 6 new operating theatres.
These works will serve an extra 25,000 patients each year, facilitating an additional 8,000 procedures and 1,300 births.
Included in the development is an emergency department short stay unit, an upgraded pharmacy, back-of-house areas, 333 extra car parking spaces as well as refurbished café and retail areas.
The project will create 92 new jobs and 21 apprenticeships during construction. Working with Monash University, Monash Health will build new education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students to receive job training in Berwick.
Completion of the expansion is expected by the end of 2019.

A recent 38-hectare acquisition at the corner of Berwick-Cranbourne & Thompsons Road will see the development of a master-planned $150 million dollar business park.
The site, which is zoned within an approved Precinct Structure Plan, will deliver a unique range of opportunities to the area such as large format retail, a service station, convenience outlets and a number of industrial lots.
Once complete, it is said the development will provide a great asset to the area and create a number of local jobs.
